Splendour in the Grass
Splendour in the Grass Festival
Belongil Fields Byron Bay
Saturday 4th August / Sunday 5th August
Info for Under-18s
If you happen to be in Byron Bay in the first week of August, Splendour
In the Grass is the mid-winter all ages festival event to be at. Since
2001, this annual extravaganza has taken place at Belongil Fields, an
expansive caravan park/camping ground on the outskirts of this iconic
beachside tourist town in northern NSW.
This year’s event features the Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, Powderfinger,
Klaxons, Kaiser Chiefs, Lily Allen, the Hilltop Hoods, Hot Chip, Blue
King Brown and more. Check out www.splendourinthegrass.com for the rest
of the line-up.
Before you start stuffing your backpack though, you’ll need to
nab yourself a ticket. Now these are some hot little suckers. In the last
two years all of the tickets to Splendour have sold out in a little over
a day, so if you wanna go, get yourself organised for when tickets go
on sale on Monday 14th May.
If you’re under-18, there are a few other things you need to note
before lashing out on a ticket, airfare or planning that long road trip:
• Splendour has an anti-scalping system where your name and date
of birth is printed on your ticket, so you’ll also need to show
valid ID with those same details at the entrance to the festival. If you’re
under 18, you will need to bring as ID a copy of your birth certificate
PLUS one of the following: a student ID card, a bus pass or a bank account
statement in your name.
• If you’re aged 14 or under you’ll have to be accompanied
by a parent, or an adult guardian over the age of 18. If you’re
aged 5 or under you get in free, but if you’re that age you’re
probably not reading this....
• The festival is licensed - patrons wishing to consume alcohol
must have photographic ID. Anyone found supplying or buying alcohol for
an under-18 will be evicted from the event and may face criminal charges.
Any under-18 found consuming or in possession of alcohol will face similar
action.
• Under-18s are not admitted to any of the licensed bars on the
festival site. This is no big deal in most cases, as non-alcoholic drinks
can be bought in any number of places and water tanks are available to
refill your water bottle for free. There are seated restaurants and cafes
and plenty of picnic tables and grass where you can catch up with buddies
old and new. However, you don’t get to go into the Splendid Lounge
Bar where DJs from Sydney and Brisbane clubs perform.
• We ask that patrons don’t participate in moshing, crowd
surfing, climbing or stage diving. Patrons engaging in these or other
dangerous activities will be removed from the site.
• Accommodation in Byron Bay is expensive and hard to find. The
Splendour weekend is rated as peak season, so rooms in local hotels and
resorts are very pricey. A cheaper alternative is to stay at one of the
local camping grounds, but even these book out before the festival weekend.
• a limited number of tickets also go on sale on May 14th that enable
you to camp at Belongil Fields, right next to the festival site. (These
are separate to the event tickets.) These will cost you $115 (+ booking
fee) for three nights, ie Aug 3-5.
• Belongil Fields campground is alcohol free.
• Groups of under-agers are not permitted to camp without a parent
or adult guardian who is also attending the festival. The legal guardian
can be anyone aged over 18 years. If the patron is aged 14 and under,
the guardian must also keep the younger person in their company at all
times (within reason) whilst at the festival.
• Police and security are on site both in the campground and inside
the festival site for the duration of the festival. Splendour also organises
campground marshals who camp onsite for the weekend and act as an info
source and as security monitors.
• The festival has St Johns Ambulance first aid officers on site,
as well as volunteers from the Red Cross ‘Save A Mate’ program.
• Parents or guardians can drop off or pick up Splendour patrons
from the shuttle bus that runs to and from the Byron Transit Centre over
the weekend, or other buses running from local towns.
• Whether it’s because of the location, the timing outside
school/university holidays, the line-ups or the ticket price, under-18s
represent only a small percentage of the overall crowd at Splendour. The
average figure is about 7-8%, which equates to around 1500 of the festival’s
17,500 capacity.
• Events tickets this year will cost $185 (inc gst) + bf for a two-day
pass (Sat 4th/Sun 5th Aug). There’s also a ‘green’ ticket
for $3.50 more ($188.50 inc gst + bf) which is a carbon offset ticket
that allows you to help offset the carbon emissions of your travel to
and from Splendour (pretty cheap if you’re coming from Victoria!).
• Remember that if you want to camp at Splendour, it’ll cost
you an additional $115 (inc gst) + bf for camping Fri 3rd, Sat 4th &
Sun 5th Aug.
